Today, my heart is heavy with tragedy all around.
Tragedy of
those I know and don't know. Cancer that has crept into a friend's body.
Accidents taking lives. School shootings. Affairs. Lies. It is in these
times of dark weightiness, where I am pushed to the edge of my
faith. The question “Do you trust me?” never fails to come to mind.
I
remember
growing up and being taught about Jesus. A man who was born in a filthy
stable,
became a carpenter and hung around the unpopular folk. Prostitutes. Tax
collectors. Lepers. He would give "the least of these" time, touch and words. His presence was
full of
power. So powerful, he would make the deaf hear and the blind see.
In
Matthew 9, a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years was in the
presence of God and she reached out and touched the garment of Jesus to
be healed.
The woman knew the power was outside of herself to be healed and trusted in the authority of Jesus.
...for she said to herself, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.”
How did Jesus react?
Matthew 9:22 Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.” And instantly the woman was made well.
Jesus did NOT react...
"I don't have time for you" or "Who do you think you are?" or "Step
away from me, you are unclean"...Rather, Jesus turned around and
recognized her heart of FAITH. He comforted her and gave her the name
"daughter."
INSTANTLY she was healed.
Living on earth, we can't escape hurt, pain, and suffering. "Count it all joy, my brothers, WHEN you meet trials of various kinds." -James 1:2
However,
when we look to who Christ is, HE is the ultimate physician. He
TRANSFORMS darkness to light as we put our trust in His complete
righteousness.
"He uncovers the deeps out of darkness and brings deep darkness to light." -Job 12:22
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” -John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” -John 8:12
Jesus said in John 14, "Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in
God; believe also in me."
Whether
we like it or not, we were brought into this world, not by our own
choosing. There is purpose. Eternal purpose. We are passing through this life on earth
and he has blessed us with the ability to know Him. Romans 1:20 "For
his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature,
have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in
the things that have been made..."
Oh Lord, open our eyes to see a personal God who loves us. May we know the freedom that is only found in the work of Christ.
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. -I Peter 2:24
C.S. Lewis writes in his book, The Last Battle:
All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.
